Developing new energy production technology: Converting light and heat into electrical energy at the same time

Incheon National University's Department of Electrical Engineering (President Park Jong-tae) recently presented a study on the "development of new energy production technologies" for light-heat-electric energy conversion methods.
The photo-voltaic effect is expressed through the electromagnetic energy exchange method of light and is commonly used in solar cells and photo-electric devices. However, during the photo-electric conversion process, heat is generated by the vibrational motion of the material. This heat generation is a by-product of light-electric energy conversion and was considered a heat loss.
In this study, a thermal-electric energy conversion platform was proposed by actively utilizing the thermal energy generated from the light-electric energy conversion. In other words, the conversion of electrical energy by light was developed as the world's first fully transparent light-heat-electric energy fusion device through the conventional method of producing electrical energy by heat.
Dr. Malkesh, who led the study, said, "The light-heat-electric energy platform technology has the characteristics of transparent energy devices to be applied to the glass of buildings and automobiles, and has achieved power generation efficiency (11.9%) that is 2.5 times higher than the existing transparent solar power generation." In particular, it is expected that energy production will be possible not only outdoors but also indoor lighting because it has the characteristic of generating electricity in indoor lighting (LED, etc.).
Professor Kim Jun-dong, the head of the research, said that this study is characterized by using the transcendence of transparent semiconductors and is a transparent and convergent energy utilization technology through original technology development. In the future, it will announce energy conversion technology that goes beyond the existing framework and more advanced technology development in the field of energy utilization.
The results of this study were recently published in the 'Transparent integrated pyroelectric-photovoltaic structure for photo-thermo hybrid power generation' in the Nature Communications paper and introduced as a new energy technology in the Nature Portfolio.
